Ecuador Declares National Holiday After Stunning Germany to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage

Ecuador’s historic FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign sparked nationwide celebrations after the South American nation pulled off a remarkable 2-1 comeback victory over Germany to book their place in the knockout stage.

In recognition of the achievement, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a national public holiday, allowing citizens across the country to celebrate one of the greatest moments in the nation’s football history.

The decision came just hours after Ecuador completed a sensational turnaround against four-time world champions Germany in their final Group E match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Germany had already secured qualification as group winners, but Ecuador desperately needed all three points to keep their World Cup dream alive. Despite conceding inside the opening two minutes through Leroy Sané, Ecuador responded with tremendous character.

Nilson Angulo equalised in the ninth minute before Gonzalo Plata netted the decisive winner in the 77th minute, sealing a famous victory that sent Ecuador through as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Following the final whistle, President Noboa praised the team’s resilience and determination after enduring criticism earlier in the tournament.

“Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough moments they went through, managed to recover and give this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow, a holiday!” Noboa posted on social media.

The victory marks only the second time Ecuador have progressed beyond the group stage at a FIFA World Cup, having previously reached the Round of 16 at the 2006 tournament in Germany.

Ecuador’s qualification is even more impressive considering they entered the final group match after collecting just one point from their opening two fixtures, making the triumph over Germany one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far.

The dramatic result triggered jubilant scenes both inside the packed stadium and back home in Ecuador, where fans flooded the streets to celebrate a landmark achievement in the country’s football history.
