Former FAM guest player and England star dies

Former England striker Kevin Keegan has died at the age of 75.

Earlier this year, Newcastle United announced that the two-time Ballon d’Or winner was receiving cancer treatment, but did not reveal details of the illness.
In June, Keegan, who was known as “King Kev” and “Mighty Mouse”, said he had stage four cancer.

The former Manchester City manager and Liverpool legend visited Malaysia in 1984 after being invited by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

FAM brought Keegan to Malaysia to coach and play with the national youth squad. His appearance for the development team did not break FIFA rules at that time.

He was reportedly paid RM150,000 as part of FAM’s effort to revive the Merdeka Tournament and attract more fans to the stadium to support the national team, especially the young Harimau Malaya squad.

The Harimau Malaya team, led by Kevin Keegan, beat Pakistan 2-0 in the opening match of the 1984 Merdeka Tournament. Keegan scored both goals in the 44th and 89th minutes.
